The Initial seminar took place from 6th to 8th November 2013. It was attended by project partners and a panel of experts, consisting of representatives from the South and East of the Mediterranean and international institutions (FAO, Plan Bleu, EFIMED, IUCN) helped to start the reflections for the establishment of a common framework for the integrated management of rural areas in the Mediterranean basin . Thus, after a presentation of the current situation, including the EU 2020 strategy, the State of Mediterranean Forests and the Strategic Framework on Mediterranean Forests, four parallel workshops have revealed the outline of the topics to be addressed during the implementation of the project, from the management of protected areas to the payments for environmental goods and services (PES), through natural risks and the socio-economic valorisation of the Mediterranean rural areas.
